There is no narrative. Paint, applied texture and collaged materials are layered on the surface. A lot happens in a small or large space. Strong colors, dramatic shifts in shape relationships and tension between lines and shapes are characteristic of my painting.
The relationship of visual components in my paintings is similar to what happens in jazz. There are themes and variations, repetitive devices, tensions and releases, riffs, harmony and dissonance. Like a jazz piece, there is a lot of improvisation. The results are often unexpected, and even though I may have some idea of the general direction, there can be many twists and turns along the way.
